The Zimbabwe military has taken over power in the country. The military, which has seized the state TV, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), said it is targeting people close to President Robert Mugabe for causing “social and economic suffering”. A statement read out by a general on air denied it was a coup and said Mr Mugabe was safe, but did not say where. Heavy gun and artillery fire could be heard in northern parts of the capital Harare early on Wednesday. The army action comes after Mr Mugabe sacked Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, amid a row over succession. There was no immediate word from Mr Mugabe but Zimbabwe’s envoy to South Africa, Isaac Moyo, said the government was “intact”. Itse Sagay, chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), says the man who blew the whistle on the N13bn found in an Ikoyi apartment is not “sufficiently stable” to handle his N860 million reward. The whistleblower had in April tipped off the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of funds stashed in a four-bedroom apartment on Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos. The anti-graft agency had discovered $43 million, £27,800 and N23 million in the flat bought in the name of the wife of Ayo Oke, the sacked director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, said on Monday that his country would remain committed to the fight against HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Nigeria. Mr Stuart made this known at the opening ceremony of a two-day Nigeria HIV/AIDS Intervention symposium held in Abuja. The symposium with the theme “Partnering for sustainable HIV Epidemic Control in Nigeria” was organised by Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the auspices of the U.S. Embassy.
